Imagine this - you’re working in a coffee shop, quickly replying to emails before heading into the office. Someone sitting nearby glances at your screen. Harmless? Maybe. But what if they were noting down confidential information?
Or picture this - you’re at home, on a teams call, when your smart speaker suddenly lights up. Has it been listening the whole time?
Physical security isn’t just about locked doors and ID badges. It’s about the small, everyday choices that keep you, your devices, business and personal data safe.
Whether you're working from home, commuting, or in the office, here’s how to stay secure.
Secure Your Wi-Fi – Ensure your home Wi-Fi is password-protected and encrypted. Change all the default admin passwords, for routers, hubs, and switches - and hide your network name (SSID)
Use a Screen Protector – Privacy filters help prevent sensitive information from being seen by others, especially if working near windows or shared spaces.
Wear Headphones – Use noise-cancelling or secure headphones to prevent confidential conversations from being overheard.
Check Security Cameras & Smart Devices – If you have security cameras, make sure they are secure and not accessible to unauthorised users. Be cautious about smart home devices that may listen in on meetings.
Lock Your Devices – Always lock your screen when stepping away, even at home. Store devices and documents securely when not in use.
Behaviour – Follow the same security procedures and behaviours expected at your employer's workplace. Threat actors may also target your home.
Turn Devices Off When Travelling – If you don’t need them, switch off your work phone or laptop when travelling or at least log out when not in use.
Remove Name Tags & Work IDs – Avoid displaying anything that links you to your company when in public, including your branded coffee cup!
Stay Aware of Your Surroundings – Be mindful of who is around you, especially when using devices or discussing work in public. Wearing headphones often distracts you from what is happening around you. Stay alert, keep safe and keep your possessions close to you.
Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) on Work Devices – This adds an extra layer of security in case your phone or laptop is lost or stolen.
Take care when using banking apps and virtual payment cards – When these apps are open and phones are unlocked thieves will take the opportunity to snatch your phone and access your funds.
Avoid Public Wi-Fi – Public networks can be insecure. If you must use them, connect via a company-approved VPN.
No Tailgating – Never let unauthorised people follow you into the building or restricted areas. Don’t put yourself in danger and tell security or facilities if this happens.
Secure Your Devices – Lock your computer screen when you are away from your desk.
Be Prepared for Emergencies – Know your office’s emergency procedures, including fire exits and relevant security contacts.
Report Suspicious Behaviour – If something feels off - whether it’s an unfamiliar person, unattended items, or something else, report it to the relevant persons.
ID Badge Security – Always wear your ID badge in the office but remove it when outside to avoid identifying yourself as an employee.
Protect Physical Documents – Keep confidential paperwork locked away and dispose of confidential waste securely (e.g., shredding).
By making small, smart choices every day, you help keep yourself, your colleagues, and your organisation safe.
